Evaluating SInergies and Nonlinear Responses in the effect of multiple factors of global change on the biodiversity and functioning of Mediterranean ecosystems

SUMMARY

This is an observational study, where we evaluate potential synergies between three of the main factors of global change that will affect Mediterranean ecosystems: climate change, intensification of land use, and invasive species.

OBJECTIVES

SIRESME combines two complementary objectives:

1) Evaluate the mechanisms by which invasive species reduce biodiversity (direct competition, biotic homogenization, changes in interactions between species). For this we evaluate richness (alpha and beta), as well as interactions (positive, negative and non-hierarchical) between plant species in response to the presence of different invasive species and under contrasting environmental contexts.

2) Evaluate possible non-linear responses of the ecosystem to gradients of the invasive species A. altissima, and know if these responses vary depending on the climate or the degree of anthropogenic influence on the ecosystem.
